Texas wines received more accolades in the San Francisco International Wine Competition, held just before Thanksgiving.
Thirty-two Texas Wineries earned 177 Medals for the outstanding Texas Wines that were submitted. These medals included nine Double Gold Medals, 28 Gold Medals, 75 Silver Medals and 75 Bronze Medals. This is phenomenal in Texas’ fast-growing wine industry. Five Texas wines earned BEST OF CLASS as follows:
• McPherson Cellars Reserve Roussanne 2018 – Texas High Plains – Best White Rhone Varietal ($17/bottle)
• Duchman Family Winery Salt Lick Winery Tempranillo 2015 – Best Tempranillo ($52 per bottle)
• Duchman Family Winery Oswald Vineyards Aglianico 2015 – Best Other Italian Red ($40 per bottle)
• Grape Creek Vineyards Grande Rouge Sweet Red Wine 2018 – Best Sweet Red ($22 per bottle)
• Grape Creek Vineyard Ruby Port NV – Best Ruby Port ($33 per bottle)
These BEST OF CLASS wines all used Texas-grown grapes. In 2005, there were only 50 wineries in Texas. This number has grown to 550+ wineries in Texas as of the end of September 2019. It normally takes several years for a vineyard to establish itself suitable for grape production and another several years for a winery to mature in its wine-making capabilities and have available wines that have aged with complexity. Texas is now producing outstanding wines and should be recognized for its high quality level and reasonable pricing. Consumers, restaurants, and wine shops need to recognize that Texas is producing more than just a few wines of outstanding quality. As more years pass in the development of the Texas wine industry, you should expect to see a great number of high quality Texas wines made from Texas-grown grapes.
