Texas Wineries continue to gain National and International recognition. On an international basis, Bernhardt Winery near Plantersville will host a tasting of wines from noon to 1 pm this Saturday with international wine experts providing a series of lectures on wines from one of the oldest wine-producing areas in the world. The Thracians are an ethno-cultural community veiled in mystery. They settled on the Balkan Peninsula – the lands of present-day Bulgaria and parts of Greece, Serbia, Northern Macedonia and European Turkey 6,000 years ago. They made wines from some of the grapes found in that area about 6,000 years ago and continue to make wines from those old world grape varietals, some of which few New World wine lovers know about. Come learn about these wines at this international wine event at a local Texas winery.
The Houston Rodeo held its 19th annual International Wine Competition Judging on November 12 – 14, 2021 with the Judging remembering the Competition’s Founder, Charles M. “Bear” Dalton. This Judging along with the Houston Rodeo Uncorked Wine Events in 2022 is held in the NRG Center. This year’s competition featured 2,862 entries from 17 countries, including France, Spain, Italy, Israel, Peru, Argentina, and South Africa. This year’s featured Wine Region is Washington State. Texas Wines accounted for about 17.5% of all of the entries.
“The wine industry is a vital sector of Texas agriculture, which is why we are incredibly proud to host one of the largest international wine competitions in the country, as it further supports our mission of promoting agriculture,” said Rodeo President and CEO Chris Boleman.
Texas wines were well recognized in the International Wine Competition. Notable recognitions for Texas Wineries included:
• The Reserve Grand Champion Best of Show was awarded to Houston-based Nice Winery for their Cabernet Franc, Paicines, 2018.
• The Top Texas Winery was Becker Vineyards.
• The Top Texas Wine was awarded to Hye Meadow Winery for their Boooom Red, Texas High Plains, 2017.
• Texas Wineries earned 15 Double Gold Medals, 80 Gold Medals, 284 Silver Medals and 125 Bronze medals for a total of 504 medals of recognition. A summary of those winning accomplishments by winery is presented in a Table to this article.
The award-winning wines from the Houston Rodeo Judging in November will be featured at the 2022 Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup and Best Bites Competition on February 20, 2022 and will be sold at the 2022 Champion Wine Auction and Dinner on February 27, 2022 A selection of the medal-winning wines will also be available for purchase in the Rodeo Uncorked! Champion Wine Garden during the 2022 Rodeo which is scheduled for February 28 thru March 20, 2022.
